ISTANBUL (Armenpress)–Lawyers for the convicted PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan were faced with a violent protest led by locals in the town of Gemlik Wednesday.
Lawyers Asya Ulker, Muharrem Sahin, Mehmet Bayraktar and Hatice Korkut were approached by an angry crowed carrying Turkish flags as they waited for the processing of paperwork needed to see their client in front of a local gendarme post
Chanting slogans against both Ocalan and the PKK, the protestors tried to get to the lawyers’ van but were prevented by members of the security forces.
Security forces took the lawyers to the garden of the gendarmerie building for their protection. A window of the van was broken during protest.
Ocalan, who was arrested in 1999 and convicted for crimes of terrorism, has, since his arrest, campaigned for a peaceful solution to the Kurdish conflict inside the borders of Turkey. He is serving a life sentence as the only prisoner on the island of Imrali in the Sea of Marmara.
