YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Russia’s military attach in Armenia–Colonel Anatoly Balayev denied reports by Georgian sources which quoted Azeri state foreign policy advisor Vafa Guluzade as saying that six Russian warplanes–had arrived in Yerevan.
Balayev said four MIG-29 fighters–not six–had landed at Yerevan’s Zvartnots airport. They arrived in Armenia to strengthen the air groups of Russian military base No. 102 stationed there.
Azerbaijan is seriously concerned over the recent delivery of six Russian fighter planes to Armenia–the Azerbaijani state councilor for foreign affairs Vafa Guluzade told Interfax on Monday.
Moscow seems to be re-arming Armenia in an effort to recoup its losses to the West in the Caucasus after Russia’s failure in Yugoslavia–he said.
Azeri Defense Minister Safar Abiyev had said last week that his country would like NATO involvement in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
