YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Renowned Armenian poetess–Silva Kaputikian– responded to Levon Ter-Petrossyan’s recent statemen’s that "the events of Sept. 26–1996–were a shame for Armenian history," writing in a piece entitled–"What a Disgrace," that it was Ter-Petrossyan’s manipulation of the presidential elections that was the true disgrace.
According to Kaputikian–the real disgrace was that "the deceived–oppressed and poor people" of Armenia rose to its feet in a bid to get rid of "its oppressors," and that on learning of "the manipulations of the elections," went to the Central Electoral Committee in order to uncover the president’s defeat and perhaps exceeded its limits.
However–Kaputikian said it was unfortunate that Armenian soldiers opened fire on their own people–and that "the just mass aspiration" was suppressed.
Kaputikian also stated that it was a disgrace that the Armenian Prosecutor General brought high treason and coup attempt charges against certain demonstrators–as well as made arrests and fabricated trials based on "confessions" extracted through medieval tortures and interrogations.
Furthermore–Kaputikian noted that a statement made by one of the country’s leaders suggesting that even if the opposition got 100 per cent of the vote–they still wouldn’t have given up power–was also shameful. Kaputikian also said it was a disgrace that Ter-Petrossyan– who lost during the elections–remained in power–carrying on with turning Armenia into a territory "without will and Armenia’s– overlooking the suffering of the people which is growing day by day."
