YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)-The National Assembly of Mountainous Karabagh Republic (MKR) dedicated its February 16 session to the 45th anniversary of MKR’s first Chairman of the Parliament (Supreme Soviet) Arthur Mkrtchian–the first head of independent MKR–who tragically passed away on April 14–1992–when only 33 years old.
Speaker Oleg Yesayan said it has become an annual tradition to commemorate Arthur Mkrtchian’s birthday–and to mark his untimely death. Subsequent speeches emphasized Mkrtchian’s intellect–remembering him as a noted scientist and devout patriot.
"Mkrtchian brilliantly fulfilled his mission during a difficult and fatal period; with all its attributes of statehood–MKR is the best proof that Arthur Mkrtchian’s work was not in vain," Deputy Vahram Atanesian stressed.
Deputy Vahram Balayan noted that Arthur Mkrtchian was not only a great political figure–but also a scientist who took scientific approaches to all social-political processes. He was the first to realize that freedom and independence could be achieved only by way of a national-liberation struggle–stressed Balayan.
National Assembly Deputies and public sector representatives also laid flowers on Mkrtchian’s grave at the Stepanakert Memorial Complex.
