STEPANAKERT (ArmRadio)—The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Self-Defense Army announced Friday that one of its soldiers, 20-year-old Aharon Hayrapetyan was killed Thursday evening by Azeri snipers in another violation of the cease-fire.
This latest Azeri violation came a day before OSCE Chairman in Office, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius Ažubalis, was due to meet with leaders of Armenia and the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic as part his tour of the region and hours after a prisoner swap monitored by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
“The Armenian serviceman was fatally wounded in the eastern direction of the line of contact between the armed forces of Nagorno Karaabakh and Azerbnaijan, near Askeran. He was immediately taken to a military hospital, where he died at 6:59 p.m.,” reported the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Defense Army press service.
“The fact that the Azeri side carried out its repeated attack an hour after the exchange of prisoners under an agreement by the presidents in Sochi, indicates that the Azeri side does not only fail to respect the ceasefire, but also tries to deliberately bypass any mission targeted at the peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” added the Karabakh Army statement. “International organizations involved in the conflict resolution process must provide the adequate response to this issue.”
