(Armenpress)–The President of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic on Thursday awarded Twenty Karabakh freedom fighters with medals of honor for their outstanding service and dedication during the liberation of Shoushi.
17 veterans from Shirak and 10 from Armenia’s Lori provinces were awarded on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of Shushi’s liberation. Artashes Mkhitarian, a Colonel of the Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Army, who was commander of the ARF Gyumri Company during the war related the liberation of Shushi to the heroic battles in 1918 that paved the way for the establishment of the First Republic of Armenia.
"If we realize that all shortcomings [in the past] were because we lacked our own state, then from this perspective the significance and the historical role of May battles become more important," he said.
According to theKarabakh veterans attending the ceremony, the most important thing for them was the liberation of Armenian lands, and the establishment of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and its army.
This award is important because it keeps alive the memory of their friends who were killed in battle, Karabakh Veteran Rafik Ghazinian said.
