NEW YORK–His Holiness Karekin I–Catholicos of All Armenian underwent surgery Monday to remove a tumor from the floor of his mouth–announced Primate Arch. Khajag Barsamian.
His Holiness’ primary surgeon Dr. Roy Session stated that the surgery was successful. Sessions is regarded as the lading maxilofacial surgeon in the United States.
In the days leading up to the operation–Karekin I was surrounded by family members and friends–among them his brother Zohrab and sister Esther; cousins Mr. and Mrs. Vahe Sarkissian; Mr. and Mrs. Vatche Manoukian and Mr. and Mrs. Haig Titizian–all of whom traveled from London to be with their friend the Catholicos. Also on hand were Dr. and Mrs. Mekhjian and Dr. and Mrs. Raffy Hovanessian.
Drs. Mekhjian and Hovanessian joined the surgical team in the operating room and provided intermittent updates to the Primate and family members.
Karekin I is scheduled to remain in the hospital for one week–following which he will continue treatment on an outpatient basis.
This procedure was a continuation of a regimen begun last spring when the Catholicos came to the US for treatment of a tumor. The original diagnosis was made by Dr. Louis Harrison–who emphasized from the onset that the condition was "fully treatable and curable."
