KAPAN (Noyan Tapan)–Prime Minister Andranik Margarian took part in the ceremonial unveiling of the Karekin Njdeh monument in Kapan on December 8 within the framework of the festivities dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the formation of the Republic of Armenia and the 115th birthday anniversary of the outstanding Armenian military commander–political figure and thinker.
The monument was erected thanks to funding provided by Mkrtich (Serge) Mkrtchian–a member of the RPA Board. Following a decision of the town’s council of elders–Mkrtchian was given the title of Kapan’s honorary citizen.
Siunik Governor Edik Barseghian said that the immortalization of Njdeh’s memory is the duty of the conscience of the Kapan citizens.
The prime minister said it was no coincidence that the first monument to Karekin Njdeh was unveiled in a military unit of Meghri four years ago and now in Kapan–because it was here that Njdeh fought with his bear hands and his unbreakable spirit.
"By declaring this year the year of Njdeh–the Armenian government wished to tell all the enemies of Armenia that this spirit is immortal," said the premier.
Margarian and members of the Board visited the new St. Mashdots church consecrated a week ago by Catholicos of All Armenia’s Karekin II.
