YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–President Robert Kocharian met Wednesday with leading officials from the DeBeers firm to discuss the development of diamond trade in Armenia.
Kocharian met with Jon Filenson and Dez Gavana of DeBeers.
Also present was Gagik Abrahamian–chairman of the Diamond Corporation of Armenia.
Kocharian told DeBeers officials that a cooperation agreement reached in 1995 had allowed Armenia’s diamond industry to develop and reform to current international standards–thus allowing Armenia to enter various international markets.
The president highly commended Filenson’s role in advancing Armenia’s position in the diamond trade market.
"The development of a diamond industry is part of Armenia’s long-term economic policy. This entails the establishment of workplaces [to cater to those programs]," stated the president–stressing that firm cooperation would benefit the advancement of this industry in Armenia.
Kocharian expressed confidence in the DeBeers company and pledged the government’s support in assisting the company in its endeavors in Armenia.
The DeBeers officials expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Armenia.
