YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The potential of the Commonwealth of the Independent States (CIS) has not been exhausted in seeking peaceful resolution of the post-Soviet conflict–said Armenia’s President Robert Kocharian on Friday in Moscow at a news conference.
President Kocharian admitted that a noticeable rapprochement between the US and Russia may impact the resolution of the Karabakh conflict in terms of re-invigorating efforts to find a mutually acceptable formula for peace.
President Kocharian stressed that there are no universal formulas for solving conflicts.
The president of Azerbaijan Haydar Aliyev was disappointed with the stalemate to finding a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within the framework of the CIS.
But Russia’s President Vladimir Putin was more optimistic about the CIS’s ability to solve conflicts. "The CIS has a unique experience of solving conflicts. We were able to solve the inter-ethnic conflict in Tajikistan," Putin said.
He also said that the existence of the CIS helped to ease inter-ethnic conflicts between former Soviet republics.
