YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"The issue of Genocide remains a crucial one for our people–especially since the world has not given [the issue] the proper condemnation or attention," said president Robert Kocharian Wednesday during a meeting with a visiting French parliamentarian and the French Ambassador to Armenia.
French Parliamentarian and chairman of the France-Armenia Friendship caucus Jean Paul Bredin told Kocharian that they are actively pursuing the recognition of the Armenian Genocide–since it was not only an Armenian issue–but rather a question which concerned the entire conscience of humanity.
Bredin joined French Ambassador Michel Legras in congratulating Kocharian on his election and conveyed greetings from French prime minister Lionel Jospin.
Bredin told Kocharian that the presidential elections and the inauguration represented a new level of democracy in Armenia.
"These traditions did not exist in our country and today we are forging new basis for the future," replied Kocharian.
The peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was also part of discussion during the meeting.
