YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan). President Robert Kocharian addressed the nation on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. In his address–the President said:
Ten years have passed since the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR adopted the Declaration of Armenia’s Independence. Among the landmark political events in the Armenian history of the recent decade this event stands out by its paramount importance.
Expressing the united will of the Armenian people–our parliament thereby declared its goal and readiness to establish independent statehood–contribute to the cause of the international affirmation of the 1915 Armenian Genocide–get a fair solution to the Karabakh problem and build a democratic–law-abiding society.
The subsequent events showed the viability and great historical importance of the Declaration adopted on August 23–1990. The principles and ideas of the Declaration became a guiding force both for the country’s internal processes and its foreign policy.
Indeed–ten years are too short a period to realize all the aspirations and goals reflected in the Declaration to their fullest. But the long path we’ve traveled is clear evidence and proof that the Armenian people are capable of setting tasks and realizing them consistently.
August 23 is the outset of a long path."
Prime Minister Andranik Markarian also addressed the nation in connection with the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Markarian said:
"On this day ten years ago–the Armenian people confirmed their decision to live as a free and independent nation and to build their own state. The Declaration adopted by the Armenian SSR Supreme Council stipulated the basic principles that opened up vast opportunities to establish equal relations with all the nations of the world–to build civil society and a law-abiding state in accordance with the laws of the civilized world–to develop economic cooperation–spiritual and cultural ties with other nations. Since then–despite all the difficulties–our state and people have remained loyal to the fundamental principles of the Declaration. Independence has no alternative. The spirit of independence and freedom is the lodestar that will lead us into a positive future."
