YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenia’s President Robert Kocharian met with a visiting group of US Congressional staff members–representing the US Republican and Democratic parties–who arrived in Armenia at the invitation of the Armenian Assembly of America on April 18.
President Kocharian was quoted as saying that the Armenian leadership highly appreciates such visits. Kocharian also praised US-Armenian cooperation and underlined the importance of further development of the relations between the two countries.
At the request of the guests–Kocharian informed the delegation of the Karabakh settlement process–the Key West negotiations and presented his assessmen’s and impressions.
Also discussed were issues related to the business-forum on Armenia to be held in New York in May. Kocharian emphasized that it is the first time that such a high-level event on Armenia will be organized with active assistance from the US government and sponsorship of the World Bank. "Armenia is in serious preparation for the forum and will make the most out of the opportunity to demonstrate the business capacities of our nation," he underlined.
The president stated that the economic policy of the country is aimed at encouraging business–and creating new jobs. According to him–registered economic showings testify to positive economic trends. At the same time–Kocharian pointed out that the economic reforms are carried out under a program jointly approved with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The president addressed the measures toward reforming the business environment and investment protection.
Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian also met with the visiting congressmen. According to the foreign ministry–the sides discussed the recent talks in Key West and issues connected with Section 907 and maintenance of aid to Armenia. The process of recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the US Congress was also discussed.
