YEREVAN (Armenpress/US State Dept.)–President Robert Kocharian met with US ambassador to Armenia John Ordway and USAID/Armenia Mission Director of Robin Philips–on Wednesday to discuss US humanitarian aid projects implemented in Armenia–as well as Armenia’s participation in the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA)–a program designed to spur economic growth and attract necessary investment to poorer countries seeking to finance their own futures.
Under the MCA–qualifying countries propose specific programs to address the greatest obstacles to their development. MCA will be awarded to governmen’s–non-governmental organizations–and private organizations–for programs that promote good governance–further economic reform and anti-corruption efforts–develop enterprise and the private sector–build capacity for trade and investment–raise agricultural productivity–and promote health and education. A new government corporation will administer MCA gran’s to ensure effective implementation.
