YEREVAN (RFE./RL)–President Robert Kocharian–who underwent a medical check-up in Paris last week–returned to Yerevan on Saturday and is now in good health–a presidential spokeswoman’said on Monday. A thorough medical examination by French doctors found that "the president is perfectly healthy," the head of the presidential press service–Hasmik Petrosian–told RFE/RL.
Kocharian’s sudden departure last Tuesday sparked different speculations in Armenia–with some commentators questioning official claims that the trip was undertaken for purely medical purposes. The 46-year-old president was not known to be suffering from a particular illness.
Petrosian reiterated her earlier assertion that he went abroad for a "general medical examination." She confirmed reports that Kocharian was in Paris during his five-day absence from Armenia. The destination of the trip was initially not disclosed to "make sure that the local [Armenian] community does not disturb him," Petrosian explained.
Meanwhile–a senior member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation party said the head of state was in Paris to receive dental treatment. "As far as I know it was a dental problem," Alvard Petrosian said.
