YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenian President Robert Kocharian issued a statement on the 83rd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide Thursday–in which he stressed that the international denial of the Genocide impeded peace in the Caucasus.
Below is the translated text of the statement.
The Armenian Genocide is our nation’s modern history’s most tragic and solemn page. For us Armenia’s–the 20th century began in Ottoman Turkey with the terror of the genocide and annihilation of the Armenian people–which greatly impacted the future–the psyche and the conscience of our nation.
However–the Armenian Genocide is not only the tragedy of the Armenian people but of all humanity. The criminal intention of genocide–no matter by whom or against whom it is perpetrated–is a crime against humanity and does not have an expiration date. The Armenian Genocide is a heavy burden on the Armenian people–first–because it remains an unpunished crime–and furthermore it has not received due international recognition and condemnation. And–more importantly–there has not been regret. And–it was for this reason that in the 20th century–the world witnessed similar major crimes–among which were the 1988-1990 Sumgait and Baku events.
Today–bowing to the memory of out millions of martyrs–we have to fulfill our responsibility and acquire condemnation of the 1915 events–reminding the world of our tragedy–and preventing future such crimes against humanity. And–hope that the international community–correctly assessing the incident–will forever remain intolerant of such crimes.
Unfortunately–the Armenian Genocide has remained in the mind frame of our nation–and with that we are entering the 21st century. We do not want to be slaves to the past–however freedom remains in the world’s recognition of the past. Recognition of the Genocide will serve advance world peace and harmony. Therefor–today–through the united efforts of all Armenia’s and all world humanitarian powers–our primary goal is to declare the victory of historical justice and secure our homeland’s peaceful development and strengthening.
