YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–On October 27–President Robert Kocharian received the visiting US Undersecretary of State Strobe Talbott. The Talbott-led delegation also included Advisor to the US Secretary of State on Newly Independent States Stephen Sestanovich–cochairman of the OSCE Minsk Group from the US Carey Cavanaugh–and other high-ranking officials of the US Administration.
Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan–Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanian also participated in the talk that lasted four hours. The meeting discussed a wide range of issues pertaining to the Karabakh settlement. The sides exchanged views on the current state of the settlement process as well as possible steps towards establishing peace and stability in the region.
Saying that the delegation had arrived in the region with a special assignment of the US President and Secretary of State–Strobe Talbott emphasized that the US highly assess the activities of the Armenian president aimed at settling the conflict. At the same time–he stressed that his country is ready to direct its efforts towards making peace in the region a reality in the near future.
Hailing US steps in the direction of peaceful settlement of the conflict–Kocharian expressed hope that with the assistance of the world community it will become possible to find a mutually acceptable settlement plan.
He stressed that the Karabakh conflict must be resolved peacefully. Attaching great importance to resuming the negotiating process within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group–the president stressed the importance of Karabakh’s full participation to the negotiating process.
The sides also discussed issues pertaining to the development of economic ties and regional cooperation.
