
LAS VEGAS—With the approach of April 24, a special committee was called to action to mark the start of the Armenian Genocide 100 years ago. Representatives from the Armenian American Cultural Society, The Armenian Apostolic Church (St. Garabed), The Armenian Apostolic Church (Western Diocese), The Armenian Evangelical Church, The Armenian Protestant Fellowship, The Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Ishkhan Gomideh), ANC Las Vegas, Homenetmen (Artsakh Chapter), The Armenian Relief Society (Shushi Chapter), AGBU Las Vegas, The Knights of Vartan, Trex Las Vegas, and ACYO Las Vegas joined together and formed the Armenian Genocide Centennial Commemoration Committee of Las Vegas, to present multiple events to the general public leading to April 24. The Educational Subcommittee of this organization kicked off the year with two Blood Drives in the month of February at St. Garabed Church and in March at the Campus of the Diocese Church.
In February, the film “Screamers” was shown at the Campus of the Diocese Church. In March the movie “Assignment Berlin” was screened at Saint Garabed Church.
An Art Expo, “The Genocide Through the Eyes of Children” is on display at Koojakian Hall.
A commemorative plaque was unveiled on the Campus of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV) sponsored by AACS and the UNLV History Department. On April 18, the educational subcommittee had a cultural program at UNLV that presented the talents of the community to a crowd of hundreds.
On April 24, a huge crowd is expected at Sunset Park, to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and have an official groundbreaking of an Armenian Genocide memorial. On the same day, several Billboard trucks will be roving on the famous Las Vegas Strip to publicize the Armenian Genocide to locals and tourists alike.
