YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–At its Tuesday meeting the Armenian Parliament approved in their first reading two bills on amendmen’s to the Law "On military obligation."
The Parliamentary Committee for Education–Science–Culture and Youth Affairs proposed an amendment releasing from military obligations persons having academic degrees of candidates and doctors of sciences if they are engaged in professional–research or teaching activities.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for State and Legal Affairs Victor Dallakian proposed an amendment under which certain categories of servicemen have the right to serve in military units near their places of residence. Under another amendment–brothers called up to military service may serve in the same military unit.
Referring to the data provided by the government–Dallakian pointed out that 17,116 unmarried mothers having 10,777 sons had been registered in Armenia by January 1–2000.
