TBILISI (Noyan Tapan)–In response to Boris Gagoupava’s statement underlining his desire to settle Meskheti Turks within Javakhk–Akhalkalak "Nor Acher" representative Anzor Damarashvilin announced that there can be no talk about such a move. According to Damarashvilin–who believes that Gougapava has little knowledge about the specifics of the region–"the local inhabitants look unfavorably upon the possibility of the settlement of Meskheti Turks–which could breed resistance throughout the country."
"Artounaper" parliamentary faction representative Koumram Sharatsen called upon Gagoupava to apologize for his announcement–which he considered to be "irresponsible."
Georgia entered the European Union in 1999–agreeing with the body’s condition to secure the settlement of the Meskheti Turks within Javakhk by 2012. Approximately 400,000 Meskheti Turks had been resettled throughout Central Asia during the 1940’s.
