BEIRUT–To celebrate the 112th anniversary of Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Day–a unique reception was organized in the Gefinor Rotana Hotel of Beirut. The following government officials and dignitaries attended reception: Interior Minister Elias Murr–representing President Emile Lahoud; Bint Jbeil MP Ayoub Humayed–representing Speaker Nabih Berri; and Minister of State Michel Pharaon–representing Premier Rafik Hariri as well as numerous ministers of Lebanese government.
Armenia’s Minister of Urban development David Lokian–Armenia’s Ambassador to Lebanon Areg Hovhannisian–Prelate Bishop Gegham Khacherian representing the Armenian community of Lebanon–as well as numerous Lebanese parliament members. Army commanders–mayors–political activists and media representatives also attended. ARF Central Committee Representative Hovig Mekhitarian–addressing the gathering–outlined the ARF’s social and political work since its establishment–and the role it has played in advancing the Armenian cause.
"As a political party we will always stand by the side of the Lebanese government and its institutions," stated Mekhitarian–adding "that the Armenian people and specifically the ARF has known from the very beginning that this is the correct choice.
Addressing the inequality displayed by the government in its failure to appoint two Armenian ministers–Mekhitarian stated that promises to correct the situation have not materialized and the community still waits. "Upcoming changes in government present the opportunity to fully rectify the situation in accordance with the Taefe agreement," said the ARF representative.
Speaking about the Ainjar property issues–Mekhitarian said that postponement of a resolution only increases intercommunity tensions.
