YEREVAN(Armenpress)–Restoration and construction of thirty-four cultural institutions in Armenia are nearly complete by way of a $17.5 million grant from Kirk Kerkorian’s Lincy Foundation.
Three museum-homes and the Vartan Ajemian drama theater were restored in Shirak–while the Minas museum-home was constructed in Jajur. Among the restored building and sites are the cultural palace of Vanadzor–the Garni historical-cultural complex in Kotayk–the pan-Armenian youth camp in Dzaghgadzor–the Zvartnots historical-cultural complex of Armavir–and the Sardarabad Monument.
Restoration work in Yerevan included the opera and ballet houses–the Aram Khatchadurian and Arno Babajanian concert halls–the Komitas chamber concert hall–the Madenataran–and the National Museum of Art; in all–ten museums and theaters.
"This is unprecedented," said the president of the "Culture" program Gagik Mkertumyan. "In only one-and-a-half years–thirty-four cultural institutions that had been neglected for forty to fifty years were restored."
He added that 4,500-5,000 workers have been employed to implement the programs–and that work remains on the Komitas National Conservatory and other institutes.
