YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Specialists at the Yerevan State Engineering University (YSEU) have created the first of its kind Armenian-English electronic translator. It can translate phrases from both English to Armenian/Armenian to English–check spelling–make corrections–and sound out both English and Armenian pronunciations.
The innovators are the Manukian brothers who are well-known in Armenian for their IT skills. Students at the Department of Computer Technology and Informatics of YSEU also helped in developing the program.
One of the inventors who serves a the Head of the Staff at YSEU Dr. Eduard Manukian stated that expert systems previously used in technical diagnostics of military facilities–serve as the basis of the program.
With the freezing of research funds after the collapse of the USSR–projects that the Manukian brothers worked on were halted. The brothers utilized their already conducted research in soviet times to solve a vital problem in creating the Armenian-English electronic translator.
According Manukian–similar Armenian-English translators do not exist in Armenia–only electronic vocabularies or spell-check systems. The new program–however–recognizes not only the meaning of a sentence based on vocabulary–but also utilizes the semantic tree in the translating process.
The program can successfully be used while studying–as any fragment of a text can be translated both on the monitor and by sound.
The current vocabulary of the program is only 600 words; increasing it is only a technicality say the inventors.
