YEREVAN (ARF Press Office)–ARF Bureau Chairman Hrant Markarian–accompanied by Bureau member Mario Nalbandian met last Friday in Buenos Aires with national benefactor Eduardo Sefferian. Unger Markarian thanked Sefferian for his assistance to the organization. During the meeting–matters affecting daily Armenian life as well as the political and economic situation of Armenia were discussed.
On that same day–Unger Markarian met with former Argentine president and presently the leader of the Radical Civic Union (UCR)–Raul Alfonsn. Also present during the meeting were Bureau member Mario Nalbandian and Chairman of the Central Committee of ARF-South America Haroutiun Ohannesian.
In 1984–under Alfonsn’s presidency–both the Argentine National Congress and the Chamber of Deputies adopted legislature recognizing the Armenian Genocide. And in 1987–then still president Alfonsn addressed the Armenian Genocide in a meeting with Armenia’s. Unger Markarian thanked Alfonsn and praised him for his consistent positive stance concerning Armenian issues.
As vice-president of Socialist International–Alfonsn discussed the current political and economic crises of South American countries–and lessons that Armenia an learn from their experiences so as to avoid similar situations. The meeting also discussed the undertaking of a peaceful settlement to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict–and existing military and political developmen’s in the Southern Caucusus–stressing the importance of Socialist International’s presence in the region and the role of the ARF as a Socialist International member.
