MARSEILLES–With the intent to establish a fund to benefit the construction of the Marseilles Hamazkaine Jemaran complex–a fundraising dinner–under the auspices of the Catholicosates of Etchmiadzin and Cilicia–took place on Saturday–December 7 in Marseilles.
With previous pledges and those collected at the event–300,000 Euros was raised to kick off an expansive fundraising drive.
The event was organized by the Hamazkaine Central Executive–in cooperation with the school’s building committee and the Marseilles Jemaran Trustees.
Guests included His Holiness Aram I–a representative of Karekin II–a delegation representing the Catholicosate of Western Europe–Paris Archbishop Nakashian–several elected officials–members of the Hamazkaine Central Executive–the spiritual leader of the Protestant community Hovel Mikaelian–as well as representatives of ARF-Western Europe–ARS–Blue Cross-France–and Homenetmen of Marseilles and France.
A letter from the chairman of the Armenian section of the Gulbenkian Fund was read at the event; it revealed that in the beginning of next year–the Fund will allocate a significant amount to the Marseilles Jemaran Fund.
His Holiness Aram I along with the Hamazkaine Central Executive–honored Lucine Malikian for her 50 years of teaching service.
The original Hamazkaine Education Center opened in Marseilles–atop its Armenian quarter. Through the efforts of the Hamazkaine Central Executive and persistent believers and supporters–a much neglected building was rented to house the Center. Three years later–the center became too small and had to turn away students.
After years of appeals–intervention and analysis–a 7,000 square meter lot–adjacent to a school belonging to city hall–was given to Hamazkaine. In the meantime–the rented building was purchased–the school began to expand–and the need for a complex became apparent; the Hamazkaine Central Executive working with the school’s trustees–formed the building committee who that the foundation to begin construction and fundraising efforts of today.
