YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Russian Armenian film director Anna Melikyan’s "Mermaid" will be shown in the World Cinema Dramatic competition this week at the Sundance Film Festival.
"Mermaid" is a film about a girl called Alisa, who was conceived underwater in a brief beach encounter and lives in a seaside village. She stops speaking after a difficult encounter with her mother and is sent to a special school. At the age of 17, she moves to Moscow with her mother and grandmother and finds a simple job that doesn’t require her to speak to people: handing out leaflets inside an oversized cell-phone costume. But when she meets her love-interest, Alexander, her life takes a different turn.
Melikyan was born in Baku, but grew up in Yerevan. Like the heroine of "Mermaid," she moved to Moscow at 17. In 2004 she released her first film, "Mars," which was well received.
