HOLLYWOOD–One of the most popular music videos on Armenian television in the US this week is Melineh Kurdian’s "As Good As You."
The song and the singer-songwriter have taken the Armenian community in Southern California by surprise.
Melineh’s fresh, original lyrics, her acoustic guitar, and charismatic performances are the talk of the town.
Melineh’s brand new music video, featuring artistic visuals, plays of light and shadow, still photographs and live action images have proven addictive to the viewers.
The video of Melineh making Armenian coffee, sourj, and lamenting about unrequited love, premiered two weeks ago on Horizon TV’s "M Club."
Tatevik Ekezian, the "M Club Top 10" music video show host, says viewers have been calling about the video, and their reactions have surprised her, especially because the song is in English and most of the videos on the Top 10 countdown are in Armenian.
"Right after the video premiered," says Tatevik, "people started voting for her music video. They liked it and were leaving voice mails saying the video and song were very unique. They want to see it again."
Since the video’s television debut, it has continued to garner votes from television viewers, keeping it in the music video program’s Top 10.
"As Good As You" is the debut music video from Melineh’s debut album "From Where You Are."
Music critics have called the album "the real deal, poised to grab you wherever you are." And the album already has grabbed hundreds, who turned out to cheer Melineh’s perform last week at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood.
"I’ve never met anyone with such a calming spirit," says freelance writer Adrineh Gregorian. "When I first met her, I felt like she had been my friend for years."
Next week, Horizon TV viewers will have the chance to see Melineh in person when the Armenian-American songwriter and performer takes the stage at Genghis Cohen (740 N. Fairfax Ave. at Melrose, Los Angeles). Melineh will perform with singer-songwriter Julie Loyd on Tuesday, March 25 at 8 p.m..
"Her special aura translates into her music," says Adrineh. "Her live performances are raw, honest, and truly special."
The New York Times calls Melineh’s music "soulful and amusing," which make
sense when you see this young firebrand on stage, strumming the guitar and performing her original songs with great drama and emotion.
"Melineh’s unique sound, the tone of her video, the relaxed, insightful wisdom of her words has surprised people," says Tatevik. Melineh’s video on Tatevik’s show is holding its weight in the company of established stars like Andre and Sirusho.
"The video is a hit because of her style, the beauty of the song and video," says Tatevik.
