MONTEBELLO–With more than 650 people in attendance–Armenian Mesrobian School’s New Year’s Eve dinner gala at Holy Cross Cathedral Bagramian Hall raised $80,000. Mesrobian Finance Committee Chairman Dr. Armen Chalian said that the response to the event was overwhelming. "There was definitely a lot of excitement. People had heard about our plans with Vache–the Casino and the activities for kids. We had guests come from Orange County–Pasadena–the Valley–Glendale–and of course–Montebello. Our only regret is that we were sold-out–so many people had to be put on a waiting list."
Popular singer Vache did not disappoint the crowd. He performed with his full ensemble of musicians and background singers. He sang and played guitar well past midnight and the dance floor was always full. At midnight–hundreds of balloons fell from the sky–noisemakers rang out–and loved ones embraced.
Throughout the evening–many guests also enjoyed playing casino games for prizes. Professional dealers supervised blackjack–craps and roulette tables in a Vegas-style casino. Prizes included round-trip plane tickets to Las Vegas–24 carat gold and diamond jewelry–custom gold-plated cigar accessories–and men’s and women’s watches. Meanwhile next door at Tumanjian hall–kids were entertained by professional magician Bob Stone. Adult supervision was provided and kids of all ages enjoyed the show.
Mesrobian School Principal–Hilda Saliba was very pleased with the turnout. "One of the most appealing aspects of the festive evening was the way a variety of guests came together to welcome the New Year with a great deal of elegance. The air of sincerity and warmth among guests was truly memorable. There was a wonderful sense of synergy which reflects the way members of the community have made great strides in embracing one another and productively working towards a common end." Principal Saliba also thanked the generous sponsors for the evening.
