BAKU (Armenpress)–The European Union’s special representative to the South Caucasus Heikki Talvitie–arrived in Baku on Wednesday for a three-day visit that included a meeting with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev.
According to the Baku-based Zerkalo daily–Aliyev stressed the importance of Azerbaijan’s integration into European structures–pointing to the headway already made in this direction. "Azerbaijan’s relations with the European Union are at a high level and I–as the head of state–will make every effort to develop bilateral relations even further," Aliyev stated. He also stressed that the European Union should speed up its activities to ensure peace–stability–and security in the South Caucasus.
Talvitie stressed the importance of restoring peace and security in the region–and promised that the European Union would speed up its work in this direction.
In meeting with Foreign Minister Vilayet Guliyev–Talvitie mostly discussed a peaceful resolution of the Mountainous Karabagh conflict as an only option to reaching a settlement.
Talvitie will be meeting with members of parliament–political parties–and non-government organizations.
