WASHINGTON (Trend.az)—The US Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group mediating the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict met in Washington DC on Thursday with the visiting speaker of Karabakh’s National Assembly Ashot Ghulyan, Armenian and Azeri media reported.
Ghulyan was in the US Capital to take part in a Congressional program on Tuesday celebrating the 19th anniversary of Nagorno-Karabakh’s declaration of independence. He has been meeting with US officials and congressional representatives throughout the week.
U.S. Co-chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group Robert Bradtke met with the parliamentary delegation of the separatist Nagorno-Karabakh regime led by Speaker Ashot Ghulyan, during their visit to the United States, Armenia Today reported.
Bradke and Ghulyan discussed the Karabakh peace process, ways of strengthening the cease-fire agreement and the recent activities of the Minsk Group Co-Chairs.
Ghulyan also met with the Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs Howard Berman. The U.S. Congressman welcomed the meeting with Ghulyan and pledged to continue focusing on Nagorno-Karabakh.
According to News.am, the meetings have annoyed Baku, with the Azeri Foreign Ministry summoning the US Chargé d’Affaires Adam Sterling for consultations.
Azeri Foreign Ministry Spokesman Elhan Polukhov said “a note of protest was handed over to the U.S. diplomat,” the Azeri Press Agency reported.
“In the note, Azerbaijan expressed its deep regret and strong protest over the events,” Polukhov said, citing the letter.
“Such facts as organization of visits by third persons from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan caused Azerbaijan’s strong protest, especially as the USA is co-chairing an organization holding peace talks. Such visits overshadow the bilateral relations,” the letter said.
