YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Rafael Ghazarian–chairman of the National Council–offered his support to the turnover in Armenia’s government. "We look at the current political situation positively–above all–the resignation of the Ter-Petrosyan administration," said Ghazarian–a member of the National Academy of Sciences. "We deem that the solution to the Karabakh issue–the major problem of the Armenian people–is in more reliable hands now."
Ghazarian found that one of the major failures of the ruling party was allowing the bearers of the old communist ideology into key positions. He suggested that even without Moscow giving orders–the party fell back on old habits which led to a growing atmosphere of cynicism among the people.
According to Ghazarian–the authorities to come will be doomed to failure–too–unless they manage to stop the bearers of the old ideology such as members of the Armenian National Movement–from being appointed to key positions. He noted that many of the supporters of the old ideology "are capable of changing their colors according to the shifts taking place within the leadership."
According to Lendrush Khurshudian–another representative of the National Council–Robert Kocharian is most likely to win the upcoming presidential race–even though the chances of Vazgen Manoukian–the leader of the National Democratic Union–should not be underestimated.
Khurshudian pointed out that a new president should call to account all those responsible for creating the current crisis and–above all–for betraying national interests and allowing defeatist sentimen’s to arise even after military gains.
