YEREVAN–The ideological grounds on which the government coalition–composed of the Republican Party–Orinats Yerkir Party and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) has been established–is nationalism–explained ARF Bureau member Vahan Hovhannisian during a press conference. The three sides signed a memorandum on Wednesday formalizing the coalition.
Hovhannisian–who was appointed Vice-Chairman of Armenia’s Parliament this week dismissed assertions that the sides of the coalition hold differing ideologies–as is the case with the opposition. "Unlike the opposition that united with the goal of getting into the National Assembly–we did so after the election–realizing the necessity to keep the country out of turmoil." He emphasized that the memorandum has social orientations.
As a member of the coalition–each side bears responsibility for all the parties involved–explained Hovhannisian. "Those days when one party was responsible solely for the actions of a certain minister–have passed; now everyone is responsible for the actions of the entire government–and if the Parliament fails to fulfill its program–the coalition will not last."
He said that the ARF entered the coalition with straightforward principals that are plainly stated in the memorandum; if the main provisions of the memorandum are not fulfilled for any reason–the party is free to leave the coalition.
Asked if the coalition would cooperate with the opposition–Hovhannisian–though declining to give a final statement on behalf of the coalition–nevertheless revealed that the ARF view is that the more educated deputies the parliament has–the better. "It is not at all important which party or bloc they represent or whether they are the opposition."
