YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A grouping of organizations in Armenia–known as the "nationalist forces" issued a joint declaration Thursday endorsing Acting President and Prime Minister Robert Kocharian’s candidacy for the presidential run-off elections scheduled for Monday.
"Based on his efforts to bring the country out of the crisis situation–the imperative of resolving the Karabakh question as a national issue–and his resolve to unite all national forces in Armenia–we offer our unwavering endorsement to Robert Kocharian during the second phase of Armenia’s presidential elections," read the statement.
The nationalist forces are a coalition of the Armenian Traditionalist–"Haikandoukht,"Hai Tahd" and Armenian Rebirth organizations.
This coalition was closely working with the Communist Party of Armenia and supported its candidate Sergey Badalian during the first phase of the elections.
In an interview with Noyan Tapan–"Haikandoukht" president Armenouhi Ghazarian stated that her organization could not support the candidacy of Soviet era Communist boss Karen Demirchian’s candidacy since he is a "traitor."
Ghazarian stated that aside from Badalian–only Kocharian can resolve all obstacles facing Armenia–including the Karabakh question.
Ghazarian also stated that she believed that not taking a position on the election was absurd and called on all forces to make concrete endorsemen’s for Monday’s elections.
The "Haikandoukht" leader denied all rumors that the nationalist front was dismantled and emphasized that the aforementioned announcement was not an attack against the Communist Party of Armenia.
