YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–At a news conference yesterday–the members of the Board of the National Democratic Union (NDU) Seiran Avagian–Filaret Berikian–Semyen Bghdasarian–as well as Secretary Vahram Mkrtichian and others denied that the NDU is in a deep crisis.
The claim was made despite the statemen’s of the NDU leader Vazghen Manugian–who is calling a meeting of the NDU Council on July 28 to discuss the crisis. As for the NDU Board’s concern–Avagian stated the reason for the meetings proposed by Manugian–is that the proposals for amendmen’s to the NDU Regulations–run contrary to the NDU’s ideology. Avagian commented on the situation as follows: "A group of people–45 NDU members–8 members of Council–are trying to split the party and form a parallel power structure within the NDU. He also believes that the statement spread by the disgruntled members on Vazgen Manugian’s relations with the NDU Board is aimed at instigating panic in the ran’s of the party.
As to whether the NDU Board suggested that Vazgen Manugian voluntarily leave the post as chairman–Avagian said that the issue was not officially raised at the meeting of the Board. As for personal talks–Avagian is not well-informed.
