YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–During the "Trial of 31" session Tuesday–defense attorney for Gagik Karapetyan–Angela Karapetyan delivered her closing argumen’s.
Just as the other attorneys during the previous remarks–Karapetyan emphasized the irregularities in the case–calling attention to the manners in which fraudulent information was attained and concocted.
Karapetyan noted that all evidence which served to further the claims of the prosecution were attained through the violation of law–as well as through the exertion of physical and mental pressure on individuals. Karapetyan went on to site Article 42–section 2 of the Armenian Constitution–which clearly prohibits such practices.
The attorney went on to say that her client–who is charged with attempted over throw of government–the selling of illegal weapons–as well as involvement in a murder case in the Mashdots District of Yerevan–is indeed innocent of all charges–and called on the Tribunal to exercise fairness in making its decision in the case.
Karapetyan stated that so-called evidence was collected under extreme pressure on her client and his relatives. Gagik Karapetyan according to the attorney was beaten in prison–and was left in an inhumane situation–in addition to being barred from legal representation initially.
Karapetyan–characterizing her client–noted that he took part in the national-liberation struggle since 1988–was a freedom fighter and he was wounded defending Armenia’s borders.
According to her–it is absurd to accuse of high treason those people who did everything to defend their homeland.
"The neighboring state [Azerbaijan] must be thankful to Armenia’s investigation–which managed to isolate Gagik Karapetyan and other freedom fighters–people whom Azeris were never able to break," concluded Karapetyan.
