BEVERLY HILLS–The Consulate of the Republic of Armenia in Los Angeles announced Wednesday that Armen Melkonian was appointed as the new Consul General to Armenia’s Western US diplomatic mission.
Melkonian was born in 1958 and is a graduate of the Yerevan State University Oriental studies department and a Ph.D. candidate of Oriental studies at National Academy of Armenian Sciences and presented his doctoral thesis on Armenian medieval man’scripts on Arab Caliphates.
Since 1992–Melkonian worked in Armenia’s presidential press office–and in 1994 he became a foreign ministry advisor. He has worked in the Armenian Embassy in Cairo for three years as lead advisor to the ambassador.
Before coming to Los Angeles–he was the director of the Near and Middle Eastern departmen’s of the Armenian Foreign Ministry.
Melkonian–who relaces outgoing Consul General Armen Baibourtian–is married to Yevgenia and has a son.
