YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenian prime minister Andranik Markarian introduced the newly appointed finance and economy minister Vartan Khachatrian–which was appointed by President Kocharian–to the staff of the ministry on November 13.
According to the government information and public relations department–the new minister is well aware of the financial sector and the situation in the country–and has the necessary work experience. Andranik Markarian said that the new minister has been appointed as head of the 2001 state budget debates in the parliament and his direct participation in them may result in adoption of a realistic budget.
Prime minister Markarian said that no major changes are expected in the sector–as the newly appointed minister will continue the work of the former within the framework of the policy adopted by the government. Markarian said that the people are displeased with the finance and economy ministry–which is quite natural in a country with a poor economy and social situation–but the ministry spends money only in accordance with the revenues–which are collected by a different ministry.
Thanking the former minister Levon Barkhudarian–Markarian assured that necessary prerequisites would be created for efficient activity of the newly appointed minister.
