The State of California is facing its worst fiscal crisis since the Great Depression. However–the recall of a duly elected Governor will harm the fiscal–business–and civic environment of the State of California. The special election will cost California’s taxpayers approximately $53 million to $66 million. Instead of focusing on how to balance our State budget–revitalize our economy–cut wasteful government spending–fund our schools and other necessary programs–our State is mired in an election to Recall the Governor.
As the nation’s largest Armenian-American grassroots public affairs organization advocating the rights of Armenian-Americans–the Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region (ANCA-WR) urges California voters to oppose the Recall of the Governor.
The ANCA-WR is opposed to the recall of any elected official who has not committed acts of corruption or malfeasance–and is not physically or mentally incapacitated in any way which would preclude him or her from serving out the full term of office. Less than one year ago–8 million Californians went to the polls to vote–and as a result–Governor Davis was reelected. It is wrong that 12% of those who voted in the last election have decided that they were not satisfied with the choice of the majority and initiated a Recall Election. This sets a poor precedent for future generations to follow–whether the sitting Governor is a Democrat or a Republican.
In view of the foregoing–the ANCA-WR recommen’s Californians to vote NO on the recall on October 7–2003.
