YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The number of immigran’s to the US from Armenia has decreased–Tigran Seiranian–the consul in the Armenian Embassy in Washington–said during a meeting with journalists–adding that there are 13,000 citizens of Armenia registered with two Armenian consulates in the US – in Washington and Los Angeles. The decrease in the flow of people is connected with the September 11 events and–consequently–with tougher measures on control over the entrance and residence of foreign citizens in the United States. Seiranian also said that the precise number of Armenian citizens living in the United States is unknown–as part of the above-mentioned 13,000 people have already acquired US citizenship–and part of Armenian citizens living in the US are not registered with the consulates.
Among migran’s from Armenia are also children adopted by American citizens. During two years only 30 adoption requests were sent to the consulate–and practically all of them were satisfied.
According to the data of the consulate–migran’s from Armenia are mainly involved in service work. As for young people–there are many people engaged in the hi-tech field.
The consul also said that the rumors that there are many Armenia’s kept in US penitentiaries for different offenses are exaggerated. He found it difficult to cite the exact figure of prisoners; there are about 3,000 prisoners from the former USSR–but Armenian citizens do not constitute their main part.
The reverse flow from the US to Armenia is determined on the basis of the number of visas issued by the consulate. In 2001–the Washington consulate issued 3,500 visas–and the consulate in LA issued 5,000 visas.
