YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Acting Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanian met with Radio Liberty president Tomas Dyne and Elizabeth Fuller–senior expert and commentator on Caucasian issues and editor of the News Line Magazine on Saturday.
During the meeting Oskanian presented the internal political situation in Armenia–stressing that the shift of authorities was constitutional. He assured that the government would continue its democratic–economic and judicial reforms.
Addressing the upcoming presidential elections–he said that international observers from the UN–the OSCE–the European Union–the Council of Europe and some countries would be invited to monitor the election. He said a free and fair election would promote Armenia’s international prestige and further integration into European structures.
Oskanian also presented the current state of the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process–saying that Armenia’still adhered to the peace talks within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group. In that regard–Oskanian said he was sure that the resumption of talks on Karabakh was the only way of establishing peace and mutual trust in the region.
The meeting also discussed issues related to freedom of speech and the press as well as obtaining information in Armenia. The importance of initiating relevant legislation was stressed.
