YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenia’s Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian said Tuesday that US-Armenia relations were not impacted by Armenia’s relations with Iran, referring to a warning by the US on Friday regarding the diplomatic alliance between the two neighbors.
US charge d’affaires Anthony Godfrey Friday said that the US was very concerned with the expansion of Armenian and Iranian relations.
The United States is extremely worried about the expansion of Armenia-Iran relations, Godfrey said Friday during a press conference at the US Embassy.
He added that the US had expressed its concern on different levels to the Armenian government.
“Two UN Security Council resolutions already directly refer to the relations with Iran and financial investmen’s. We are working with the international community to have Iran fulfill its international commitmen’s. We strongly recommend the Armenian Government to be our partner in bringing Iran close to the fulfillment of its international commitmen’s,” US Charge d’Affaires said.
Simultaneously, Godfrey noted that “they assess that the Armenian Government is executing its economic cooperation rather transparently. “We also appreciate that we are frankly told how they are going to develop these relations in the future,” he said.
As for the suggestion of Russia to jointly exploit the Gabala radio-location station, Anthony Godfrey considered it is too early to say anything. “I think speaking about it is premature and I cannot say whether the radar will once become part of the network or not,” he mentioned.
Oskanian explained that the statement by the US envoy to Armenia was not a change in the US position.
“I think that there is no change here. The relations with our neighbors were always transparent. I do not know in what context it has been said but I am sure that there is nothing to be concerned with,” Oskanian pointed out.
He also assured that Armenia was in constant contact with the US in all areas. “I once again repeat that today there are no problems between Armenia and the US connected with the Armenia’s ties with Iran,” explained Oskanian.
