YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Members of the Medical Department of the Armenian Branch of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences were elected on February 9. Members include Executive Director of the "Diagnostics" Medical Association Naira Chobanian–Professor of the Chair of Genetics and Cytology of Yerevan State University Tamara Sargsian–Director of the "Erebuni" Medical Center Artem Kushkian–Director of the Institute of Proctology Alexander Aghavelian–Director of the Stomatological Clinic of the Yerevan State Medical University Valery Tatentsian–Director of the College of the Yerevan State Medical University Georgy Adamian–and chief anesthesiologist of the Ministry of Health of Armenia Georgy Anzhelov. A prominent French-Armenian oncologist of Armenian origin–head of the Laboratory of Clinical Oncology of the Paris Clinic Henry Mondor Jean-Claude Kouyoumdjian was unanimously elected full member of the Russian Academy.
In his salutatory speech–President of the Armenian Branch of the Academy–Dr. Rafael G. Melik-Ohanjanian also referred to the need for restoring the lost ties between the scientific communities of Armenia and Russia and re-developing them. He said the Russian Academy was ready to support the projects of the Armenian Branch–including issuing short-term interest-free loans. Melik-Ohanjanian went on to say that Honorary President of the Russian Academy Tadashi Goino (Japan) had offered assistance to the Armenian Branch in implementing its projects. He promised to grant a unique collection of paintings by medieval Japanese artists–the total cost of which is evaluated at $3.5 million.
The publication of a scientific medical journal similar to the Russian publication of the Academy of Natural Sciences is likely to be among the first projects the Armenian Branch will launch.
