Poet Alicia Ghiragossian Passes Away

Alicia Ghiragossian

LOS ANGELES—Renowned poet Alicia Ghiragossian passed away on Thursday, May 22, at her residence in Los Angeles. She was 78.

Born in 1936 in Cordoba, Argentina, Alicia Ghiragossian has authored numerous volumes of poetry in both Armenian and Spanish. Among her works was also a translation of Raffi’s “The Fool” to Spanish.

Asbarez News will have more on the Khachatur Abovian Prize-winning poet’s life and celebrated works.

    She was a famous poet
    She wrote in 3 languages: Armenian,Spanish, English,
    Nominated for Nobel Prize
    But did not get as usual… being Armenian…
    She will live through us with her eternal poems…!!!
    I never read her Poems … I wish to read…

    It should be rectified that the late Alicia Ghiragossian, while translating a few pieces of Armenian poetry in the 1960s, did not translate or publish any book of Armenian literature into Spanish, including “The Fool.” She only wrote a preface to the Spanish translation of “The Fool” by Jose Moussayan and Adam F. Sosa, published in 1969.

    So sorry to learn of Alicia’s passing. She wrote a wonderful book that she titled “The Courage to Survive” and I wonder if she ever published it. I edited it for her but never learned of its publishing. If anyone knows, I love to hear. She was a brilliant writer.
