CHAIRMAN PAYS TRIBUTE VICTIMS OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE
YEREVAN (Yerkir/Armenpress)–An official Polish delegation–led by the Chairman of Polish Parliament (Sejm)–Longin Pastuszciak–is on a two-day visit to Armenia to meet with Armenian leaders. On Monday–the chairman of the Sejm met with National Assembly (NA) leaders and representatives of NA factions to discuss parliamentary cooperation and legislative issues.
The Polish delegation met on Tuesday with President Robert Kocharian who said–"Armenia attaches great importance to its relations with Poland considering it a key country in Eastern Europe."
According to the presidential press service–the sides have discussed the prospects of Armenian-Polish relations–praising the high level of political cooperation between the two countries. Both sides have underscored the importance of intensifying trade and economic ties as well as scientific cooperation.
According to Pastuszciak–"Trade volume between Armenia and Poland do not reflect the actual capabilities of these countries; there is however–great potential for cooperation."
At Pastuszciak ‘s request–President Kocharian briefed him on recent developmen’s in the Karabakh conflict regulation.
Escorted by Armenian parliament speaker Armen Khachatrian–Pastuszciak also visited the Dsidsernagapert Memorial to the victims of the Armenian Genocide and the Museum of the Armenian Genocide; there–he planted a tree in the park adjacent to the museum.
"This Memorial recalls a horrible tragedy. Today we live in a century that protects human rights–and I hope such a tragedy will never happen again. I hope that Armenia and all other nations in the world never have to face such tragedies," Mr. Pastuszciak said.
In response to the question whether Poland will soon recognize the Armenian Genocide– Mr. Pastuszciak said that Poland’s parliament is engaged in politics–and that politics aims only toward the future. "We certainly should remember the past–at least so as not to make similar mistakes."
"The most important thing is that people in Poland remember the Armenian Genocide and sympathize with Armenia’s." he said.
