YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–At the invitation of Armenian President Robert Kocharian and Catholicos of All Armenia’s Karekin II–Pope John-Paul II will pay a pontifical visit to Armenia on September 25 to commemorate the 1700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity as Armenia’s state religion.
The Pope will stay at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin from September 25 to 27–according to Kocharian’s press office. While in Armenia the Pope will meet with President Robert Kocharian–visit the Dzidzernagapert Memorial to the Genocide Victims–the St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Yerevan–and Khor Virap. He will also offer a mass in front of the open alter of Holy Etchmiadzin.
The first meeting of President Robert Kocharian and His Holiness Pope John-Paul II took place on March 25–1999–in the Vatican–when an exhibition entitled "Armenia-Rome: 2000-year-long relations" dedicated to the 1700th anniversary of Armenia’s embracing Christianity opened in the Vatican’s Library.
