YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Preparations for the Pan-Armenian Games planned for next month are almost complete. At a July 21 press conference–Pan-Armenian Games Steering Committee Chairman Ashot Melik-Shahnazarian announced that a number of stadiums and gymnasiums have been built and repaired.
The Armenian government has earmarked $72,000 for the event–including the ceremonial opening and closing of the Games. The Games Budget will also include $30,000 from V. Alexanian of Cyprus. Alexanian provided another $3,000 for monumen’s to the first Armenian Olympic Games winners–King Tigran and King Varazdat–to be set up in the town of Artashat. The statues will soon be mounted. The Steering Committee has prepared medals and cups for prize winners.
Melik-Shahnazarian briefed reporters on his meetings with Armenia’s in the Diaspora. He said he’d witnessed great enthusiasm among Diasporan athletes participating in the upcoming Games and their sponsors.
53 cities–23 countries are sending their teams to participate in the Pan-Armenian Games. Athletes will compete in basketball–volleyball–soccer–table tennis–chess–and track and field.
