LOS ANGELES (Armenpress)–Continuing his visits to the US–President Arkady arrived in Los Angeles to meet with the community and partake in the November 28 telethon to benefit the construction of the "North-South" highway in MKR. On his arrival–Ghoukassian attended a reception in his honor–with more than 500 guests representing local Armenian organizations present. Guests congratulated the president on his re-election as well MKR’s progress in building a democratic society.
Ghoukassian expressed his gratitude to the Armenian community of California for its support to MKR. "Favorable conditions have been created in Nagorno Karabakh for businesses–thanks to the more than $30 million invested in the country the last year," said Ghoukassian in presenting the socio-economic climate of the country. He stressed the importance of the existing Goris-Lachin-Stepanakert highway in developing MKR’s economy.
He asked for active support of the construction of the North-South highway–and stressed the necessity of strengthening Armenia-MKR-Diaspora ties by expanding cooperation.
The president presented awards to Armenian-American benefactors Albert Boyajian and Hagop Shirvanian for their contribution to the development of Nagorno Karabagh.
The president and his delegation also participated in celebration of the 46th anniversary of the Union of Iranian Armenia’s.
Congratulating the members of the Union–Ghoukassian stressed the importance of the role of such organizations in unifying the Armenian community. The participants of the event expressed their readiness to support the construction of the North-South highway and pledged $10,000 to the upcoming telethon.
On November 24–President Ghoukassian gave a live interview on local ABC TV. He addressed audience questions about MKR–the conflict regulation process–and prospective economic and social development of Karabagh.
That same day a reception honoring the president was held at benefactor Hagop Shirvanian house. Seventy supporters of the Armenian Educational Fund attended. The Fund has been instrumental in implementing more than thirty educational programs in MKR.
