YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Ministry of Defense of Armenia has prepared an order on free access of members of the Presidential Human Rights Commission to places of confinement and prisons.
The November 15 meeting agenda included the issue of the situation in the places of confinement in Sisian and Giumri–where the Commission members recently visited. Commission member Vardan Harutiunian stated that people who committed grave crimes and those waiting for their sentences are kept in one cell. The situation is also aggravated by the negative sanitary conditions and the remand prison’s unpreparedness for the winter.
Commission Chairman Paruir Hairikian said that the situation in prisons leave much to be desired–but one of the major problems – free access to prisons and colonies – has been solved. Commission members intend to visit the women’s colony in Abovian–and a prison in Kosh among others.
The October 27 case principal defendant Nairi Hunanian and his brother–Karen Hunanian were visited at their request. They expressed distrust for their lawyers–and were advised to engage with new lawyers.
