YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Mass media leaders and administrators held a meeting Sunday and issued a statement opposing a virtual monopoly by ArmenTel on telecommunications lines.
"For several days ArmenTel kept disconnecting telephones of the Noyan Tapan News Agency–the editorial offices of the Respublika Armenia–Ayzhm and Azg newspapers–thus–creating obstacles for the these media outlets," read the statement
"The meeting of the mass media directors announces that this–in fact–is a direct consequence of the privatization of ArmenTel which was granted an exclusive monopoly in the realm of communications. On numerous occasions the media have been subjected to monopolies–all instances proving to have severe consequences. For example the disconnection of "Arminco" from the global network–as a result of which about 2,000 subscribers were unable to communicate with the outside world for four consecutive days and the republic–in fact–found itself in an information blockade. No one is insured against similar acts as long as ArmenTel has a monopoly on communications," expressed the announcement
"Media directors announce that they will take every possible measure to consistently deal with similar methods of operation on behalf of ArmenTel."
