YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"The apparent absurdity of charges brought against Vahan Hovanessian and the other defendants [in the so-called Trial of 31] has even made the Prosecutor’s Office replace them with other–although equally as absurd–charges," a statement issued by the Council for Protection of Political Prisoners (CPPP) read. According to authors of the statement–this testifies to the fact that political pressure remains to be a decisive factor in this case. Consequently–the fate of the defendants is pre-determined and their conviction is imminent–independently of the presence of undeniable proof of their innocence. The Council believes that the opposition parties–public organizations and the public in general must promote the impartiality and just verdict in the case. Hovanessian marked his 41st birthday Saturday–making it his second birthday behind bars.
